More About Paul Marshall
That fact that I was able to grow up in Newport is something I will never take for granted. This community provides me with a profound sense of pride. This is why my wife and I have chosen to raise our family here.
But what qualifies me as a candidate?
First, I worked in Newport’s hospitality industry for 10+ years, which gave me a true understanding of Newport’s economy. This experience taught me at an early age the significance of tourism for this City.
Second, I have and will always continue to invest and volunteer in the community I live in. This includes volunteering as an AmeriCorps Lead through the Center of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges during undergrad to service trips to Guatemala, to volunteering with Bike Newport, Protect Our Winters, Clean Ocean Access and many more.
Third, I can apply my professional work toward this role. In 2014, I moved to New York City and worked in a marketing/PR firm strategizing and executing campaigns around brands, destinations and events. This lead me to take a job as the Communication Director for Ski Utah, which represents over 250 business members who see value in winter tourism. My work also was focused on strategic communication around policy issues on a local and state level.
Fourth, I completed a Masters in Public Affairs program at Brown University in 2019. During my time at Brown, I focused on the intersection of economic and environmental policy and worked on projects pertaining to sea-level rise and its effect on local marinas as well as global carbon reduction strategy for Burton Snowboards.
Last, I am currently an active member of Newport’s Planning Board and have worked on projects pertaining to the North End Urban Master Plan, Transportation Master Plan, Green and Complete Streets, and Renewable energy initiatives. Also, I am the principle owner of a small consulting firm that works with for-profit and non-profit businesses in helping build sustainability platforms.
